What is OHDOKWAN?
Master Instructor Bonthuys has personally been training in martial arts for over 25 years, and is a full time martial arts professional, he is following a personal ambition to help as many people in the local community as possible. The Academy works very closely with the Test Valley Borough Council, and is a member of Kidsafe.
Since it was founded by Mr Bonthuys in 1993, Ohdokwan has established a reputation for excellence and continues to forge ahead as a leader in martial education and personal development within the local community. Its excellent facilities and welcoming atmosphere provide a student experience second to none! With an emphasis on small classes and carefully selected, well-trained staff, the Academy challenges each student to develop to his or her full capabilities. Gifted children are guided through advanced levels, just as slower learners are helped to overcome any weaknesses.
The faculty and administration are dedicated to providing a structured, challenging, friendly, and supportive environment for learning and expect all students to be productive and dedicated members of the student body. Our small classes, close student-teacher relationships, parental involvement, broad-based curriculum, and the variety of Leadership enhancement activities, all combine to mould the Ohdokwan Black Belt Academy into a unique and exciting martial arts identity.
This Korean term can be translated and broken down into the following meaning:
OHDOKWAN: To pursue one goal – whatsoever – once it is determined
The Word "KWAN" means Martial Art's School

The name of Ohdokwan guarantees excellence
Parents may feel pain when they see their child bullied, or may feel personal failure if they or their child is not successful in life. They may hope that their child grows up to be a respectful young man or woman. Some seek relief from the behavioural problems that are plaguing them. They want for their children to be safe and want them to belong to something good.

Football, cricket, swimming and athletics are all great activities for children, but the martial arts programs provided by Ohdokwan are personal development modules via the medium of physical discipline.
Our exciting classes will focus a student's attention, thus improving his or her ability to learn. Learning builds a sense of accomplishment. With each new accomplishment a student's self-confidence grows, and confidence is the first step in the empowerment of a person's physical and mental abilities. This will then overlap into school, at home and at work for an adult.
Once we begin to develop a student's self-confidence, we are then able to instil the traditional home values of respect, courtesy, honesty, perseverance, and integrity that are the foundation of martial arts dating back over 2,000 years.
Furthermore, your child will develop perseverance. Having a 'quitting' attitude does NOT help a child tp overcome challenges at school, home – or within negative peer groups. We challenge them to take themselves more seriously.
The character growth and physical development underpinning the outcome-based training at the Ohdokwan Academies helps children excel in their academic school studies, sports, and provide them with the confidence to become the most popular in their class. They will make the right decisions when confronted with negative peer pressure. They will be leaders not followers.
